Walmart Recalls Apple Juice for High Arsenic Levels in 25 States
Walmart has issued a voluntary recall for nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice that were found to contain high levels of inorganic arsenic. The affected product, Great Value brand apple juice, was sold in stores across 25 states, as well as in Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall after testing revealed elevated levels of the chemical contaminant in the juice bottles. Inorganic arsenic is a toxic substance that can cause adverse health effects when consumed in high amounts. While the FDA categorizes the recall as urgent, the agency believes that the levels of arsenic found in the apple juice are not likely to result in serious or irreversible medical issues.
Florida-based manufacturer Refresco Beverages US Inc. initiated the recall after detecting elevated levels of arsenic in the product. The company has not yet provided a statement regarding the issue. Similarly, Walmart has not responded to inquiries about the recall.
Health Risks of Arsenic in Food Products
Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that can be found in small amounts in various food products. Inorganic arsenic, the form detected in the recalled apple juice, is more toxic to humans than organic arsenic. Exposure to high levels of inorganic arsenic can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, numbness, and muscle cramping.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified inorganic arsenic as a carcinogen, meaning it has the potential to cause cancer in humans. While the levels of arsenic in the recalled apple juice are not expected to pose a significant cancer risk, the FDA advises consumers to avoid consuming the product to prevent any potential health issues.
FDA’s Response to the Apple Juice Recall
The FDA has not received any reports of illnesses related to the consumption of the contaminated apple juice. However, the agency is urging consumers who have purchased the product to return it to the store for a refund. Additionally, the FDA is working with Refresco Beverages US Inc. to investigate the source of the arsenic contamination and prevent similar incidents in the future.
In the meantime, the FDA is conducting further tests on other apple juice products to ensure the safety of consumers.
