Onward Medical, led by CEO Dave Marver, is placing a significant focus on neurostimulation as a means to enhance the quality of life for individuals dealing with paralysis. Marver expressed optimism following recent clinical achievements and outlined the company’s future strategies at the 2024 STAT Summit in Boston, highlighting a new device designed to better manage an underactive bladder.
During the event, patient advocate Sherown Campbell, who took part in a trial involving Onward’s non-invasive spinal cord stimulator to enhance hand and arm functionality, shared his positive experience. When paired with rehabilitation therapy, the device led to improved hand and arm function in 72% of participants. Campbell, who faced challenges after a wrestling injury left him with a broken neck in 2014, noted the device’s positive impact on his recovery process.
Onward Medical is actively working on developing various devices targeting different bodily functions for individuals with paralysis, including mobility, blood pressure regulation, and temperature control. The company recently achieved a milestone by successfully implanting a brain-computer interface in a patient with the aim of assisting them in walking again. This innovative system received a “breakthrough device” designation from the FDA earlier this year, marking the fifth consecutive year that an Onward device has received this recognition.
By emphasizing movement over computer control, Onward sets itself apart from competitors in the brain-computer interface sector such as Neuralink and Synchron. The company looks forward to witnessing more success stories like Campbell’s, who has been diligently documenting his recovery journey as he regains strength and dexterity.
Campbell, a former athlete, shared his aspirations of conquering a significant mountain hike in Colorado, known as a ’14-er,’ as part of his recovery goals. However, he also acknowledged the importance of considering the challenges of aging with a spinal cord injury while balancing his life with his children at home.
The commitment of Onward Medical to advancing neurostimulation technologies for individuals with paralysis showcases a promising future for enhancing the quality of life and functional abilities for those facing such challenges. Through continued research, development, and clinical trials, the company aims to bring these innovative devices to the market, offering hope and improved outcomes for individuals like Sherown Campbell.
