Every day, my email inbox is filled with opinions on a variety of topics, but there is one issue that seems to be off-limits for many experts: the health of the major presidential candidates. This became apparent to me when I started my job as First Opinion editor last year. As concerns about the age and health of President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump, and other political figures were raised, I reached out to gerontologists and geriatricians to provide expert insights.
However, many experts declined to weigh in on the topic, citing reasons such as being too busy or not wanting to get involved in a controversial issue. While there are plenty of opinions circulating on cable TV and online, finding measured experts willing to share their insights proved to be a challenge. Eventually, I found an author who was willing to discuss the broader issue of age limits for politicians, rather than commenting directly on specific individuals.
Despite efforts to source expert opinions on the health of political figures, it remained a difficult task. Some experts expressed concerns about making judgments on health conditions from a distance, while others feared backlash from colleagues or readers. The contentious nature of the current political climate, combined with the fear of online and offline harassment, further complicated the process of securing informed opinions.
While some pieces have been published on the topic, including calls for candidates to share more medical information and discussions on doctor-patient confidentiality, finding experts willing to make bold arguments has proven to be a challenge. The reluctance of knowledgeable individuals to share their opinions due to fear of backlash is a concerning trend that limits the exchange of ideas and perspectives in public discourse.
In a time where sharing opinions can feel dangerous, it is important to create a space where experts feel comfortable expressing their views without fear of reprisal. Encouraging open dialogue and the exchange of diverse perspectives is essential for a healthy democracy. While the current climate may deter some from speaking out, I remain hopeful that we can foster a culture where bold and insightful opinions can be shared without fear of backlash.
