NEW ORLEANS – Sept. 3, 2024 — The American Heart Association, a cornerstone of lifesaving service for a century, proudly announces the selection of Hudson Mobley, a dedicated 12th grader at Haynes Academy, as the local Youth Heart Ambassador for the 2024-2025 academic year. Hailing from Metairie, Louisiana, this seventeen-year-old student is poised to make a significant impact in his community by promoting heart-healthy habits among his peers.

Standing at the forefront of the American Heart Association’s in-school programs, Kids Heart Challenge™ and American Heart Challenge™, Hudson’s mission is to inspire his fellow students to embrace healthier lifestyles that enhance both their mental and physical well-being. His selection as a Youth Heart Ambassador underscores his commitment to advocating for cardiovascular health and wellness in Jefferson Parish.

The process of selecting Youth Heart Ambassadors involved a nationwide call for nominations from young individuals directly impacted by heart disease or stroke. Candidates with personal diagnoses, a family history of cardiovascular conditions, or a profound dedication to leading heart-healthy lives were encouraged to apply for this prestigious role. Hudson’s own journey began when he bravely saved a patron’s life by administering CPR at Chateau Golf & Country Club in October 2023, utilizing the skills he acquired through school-based CPR training and lifeguard certification.

Reflecting on his lifesaving actions, Hudson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the American Heart Association’s noble mission. He shared, “I am so thankful that learning Hands-Only CPR and undergoing lifeguard training enabled me to act swiftly when help was needed. I am thrilled to have been chosen to further the lifesaving work of the American Heart Association and hopefully make a positive impact on the lives of my peers, schools, and educators in Jefferson Parish.”

The role of a Youth Heart Ambassador is a one-year commitment as a volunteer of the American Heart Association, empowering young individuals like Hudson to advocate for healthier lives for all community members. Through this position, youth ambassadors have a platform to encourage, educate, and raise critical funding in their local areas, shedding light on the profound impact of cardiovascular disease on individuals’ lives.

Acknowledging Hudson’s remarkable courage and decisive actions, James Gray, Ph.D., superintendent of Jefferson Parish Schools, commended him for his exemplary leadership within the community. Dr. Gray remarked, “Hudson’s ability to remain composed under pressure and make life-saving decisions serves as a testament to his role as a true leader in our community.”

Coretta LaGarde, executive director of the American Heart Association of Greater New Orleans, echoed Dr. Gray’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of youth leadership in advancing cardiovascular health initiatives. LaGarde highlighted the collaborative efforts with Jefferson Parish Schools to empower students and staff with essential skills, such as Hands-Only CPR, and commended Hudson’s ambassadorship as a catalyst for positive change in the local community.

The Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge programs offered by the American Heart Association are dynamic service-learning initiatives designed to educate students on enhancing their overall health while making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. These programs engage students through interactive challenges and fundraising activities, supporting critical causes such as congenital heart defects, nutrition security, CPR training, and mental well-being.

Brent Vollenweider, representing Haynes Academy for Advanced Studies, praised Hudson for his heroic actions in saving a man’s life through CPR, underscoring the importance of preparedness in emergencies. Vollenweider emphasized how Hudson’s swift response made a significant impact, highlighting the significance of being equipped to handle unexpected situations effectively.

Schools interested in participating in the Kids Heart Challenge or American Heart Challenge programs for the 2024-2025 school year are encouraged to register and join the movement towards promoting cardiovascular health and wellness among students.
