President Trump is out here making some big promises about lowering drug prices with his recent executive order. He claims that prices could plummet in just a few weeks, with savings that are, in his words, “incalculable.” He’s pointing fingers at other countries, saying they’ve been getting a sweet deal on drugs while the U.S. foots the bill. According to Trump, we could see a reduction in drug costs of up to 89%, which he thinks is going to have a massive impact on healthcare across the board.
The FDA is already looking ahead to next fall and giving Covid vaccine manufacturers some pointers on what strains to target. They seem to prefer that the vaccines are updated to match the current circulating strain of the virus. This might pose a challenge for Novavax, though, as their production method requires a lot of lead time. The FDA is leaving the door open for manufacturers to decide whether to update their vaccines or stick with the old targets. It’s a bit of a toss-up, with members of the expert vaccines panel split on what the best course of action should be.
