The Milwaukee American Heart Association is preparing for its Southeast Wisconsin Heart and Stroke Walk next month. However, closer to home, residents in the Kenosha and Racine areas can participate in a 5K Run/Walk hosted by Vonco Products on August 24 at UW-Parkside.
The event, now in its fourth year, will take place at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course on Petrifying Springs Road. Check-in starts at 8 a.m., with the 5K run at 9 a.m. and the walk at 10 a.m. Participants can choose between a one-mile walk or a 5K run. The event will go on rain or shine, and the course is stroller-friendly. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
The cost for the run is $35, while the walk is free. All proceeds will go to support the American Heart Association’s Milwaukee Heart and Stroke Walk scheduled for September 21 at Veterans Park.
Vonco President Keith Smith emphasized the importance of the event in promoting heart health, healthy lifestyles, and supporting the local community. The event has grown from a small gathering for Vonco employees to a larger community event with the support of UW-Parkside and the American Heart Association.
As someone with a family history of heart disease, Smith is committed to promoting healthy living and supporting organizations like the American Heart Association. He views the event as a way to give back to the community that has supported Vonco and himself.
Parkside Athletic Director Adam Schemm expressed excitement about partnering with Vonco and the American Heart Association for another year. The university is dedicated to being a positive influence in Southeastern Wisconsin and supporting events that promote community engagement.
Participants are encouraged to stay after the walk/run for a picnic and activities for kids, including a bouncy house. To register for the event on August 24, visit the provided link. For the 2024 SE Wisconsin Heart & Stroke Walk/5K Run in Milwaukee in September, visit SEWIHeartWalk.org.
