Eight-Year-Old Kodiak Resident Selected as Alaska Youth Heart Ambassador

In a heartwarming display of resilience and determination, 8-year-old Willow Stennett of Kodiak, Alaska has been chosen as a volunteer Youth Heart Ambassador for the American Heart Association in Alaska. Willow, a third grader at East Elementary, will be serving in this important role for the 2024-2025 school year, inspiring her peers to adopt healthier habits for improved mental and physical well-being.

The American Heart Association sought nominations from young people across Alaska who have been impacted by heart disease or stroke. Youth with personal diagnoses, family histories of cardiovascular disease, or a passion for leading heart-healthy lives were encouraged to apply for the Youth Heart Ambassador position. Willow, who was born with ventricular septal defect (VSD) and atrial septal defect (ASD), congenital heart defects that necessitated open heart surgery at just four months old, embodies the resilience and strength that the American Heart Association aims to promote.

Willow’s Inspiring Journey

Despite facing significant health challenges in her early years, Willow is now a thriving and active young girl. She has embraced an active lifestyle, participating in activities such as acrodance, ballet, aerial silks, and outdoor adventures with her family. Willow’s journey serves as a reminder of the importance of perseverance and determination in overcoming obstacles, inspiring those around her to prioritize their health and well-being.

Reflecting on her experiences, Willow shared, “When you have problems in your heart, sometimes it is not easy for other people to understand. I am healthy now and have a lot of energy, so people are surprised when they see my heart scar, g-tube, and continuous glucose monitor. They think I’m just a normal healthy kid, but it’s a lot of work to keep my heart and body healthy and strong.”

An Advocate for Heart Health

As a Youth Heart Ambassador, Willow will have the opportunity to share her story and raise awareness about the importance of heart health. Through her role, she aims to educate her peers and community about the impact of cardiovascular disease and inspire others to prioritize their well-being. Tiffany Lund, Development Director, School Engagement at the American Heart Association, Alaska, expressed excitement about Willow’s appointment, stating, “Willow has an incredible story to share, and we are excited to see the impact she will make on other students across Alaska.”

The Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge programs, in which Willow will be actively involved, offer students the opportunity to learn about health and fitness while making a positive impact on others. By participating in these programs, students not only improve their overall health but also contribute to important causes such as congenital heart defects, nutrition security, CPR training, and mental well-being. Through their efforts, students support the American Heart Association’s mission to create a world of longer, healthier lives.

Community Impact and Future Initiatives

During the 2023-24 school year, 67 schools in Alaska participated in the Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge programs. These schools, located in various communities including Anchorage, Bethel, Fairbanks, Ketchikan, and Wasilla, engaged in fundraising activities and educational initiatives to promote heart health and well-being. As schools prepare for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, there is a growing interest in participating in these programs to support the American Heart Association’s mission.

By raising critical funding and awareness about cardiovascular disease, Youth Heart Ambassadors like Willow play a crucial role in advocating for healthier lives for all. Through their dedication and passion, these young ambassadors inspire their peers to prioritize their health and well-being, creating a ripple effect of positive change in their communities.

In conclusion, Willow Stennett’s appointment as the Alaska Youth Heart Ambassador is a testament to her courage, resilience, and commitment to promoting heart health. Her inspiring journey serves as a reminder of the importance of perseverance and determination in overcoming obstacles. As Willow embarks on this new role, she is poised to make a significant impact on her peers and community, spreading awareness about cardiovascular health and inspiring others to lead healthier lives. Through programs like the Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Challenge, Willow and other Youth Heart Ambassadors have the opportunity to educate and empower their peers, creating a brighter and healthier future for all.
