I stand before my bathroom mirror, trying to calm my breathing. It’s the morning after the election, and I just found out the results an hour ago. I’ve rushed through my morning routine, feeling like a wreck with barely any time left before my first therapy session of the day.

As I struggle to compose myself, I remember my professor’s advice to remain calm when dealing with distressed patients. But in that moment, I feel far from calm. Despite my efforts to focus outwardly and set aside my own emotions, I find myself overwhelmed by distress.

Throughout the day, I engage in therapy sessions with patients who are grappling with the election results. Emotions run high – despair, anger, disappointment, fear, and more. The impact of the election on their lives is profound, stirring up past traumas and fears.

Living in the Boston area, many of my patients share similar perspectives to mine, which fosters a sense of connection. However, I must be mindful not to overidentify with them and respect differing viewpoints. It’s crucial to acknowledge the range of emotions and reactions that the election has evoked among my patients.

Some express existential dread and fear about the future, questioning the stability of democracy and the safety of vulnerable communities. The uncertainty of what lies ahead is unsettling, leaving many feeling lost and powerless.

As the day progresses, I witness the resilience and coping strategies of my patients. From disconnecting from the news to focusing on acts of kindness and self-care, they find ways to navigate the turbulent emotional landscape. I am reminded of the importance of staying grounded and present in the face of uncertainty.

In the evening, I reflect on the profound impact of the election on individuals’ lives and the need for self-compassion and support. As I lie down with my son, listening to his steady breathing, I find a moment of peace amid the chaos. I realize that we are all navigating choppy waters, one breath at a time.

As I prepare for the road ahead, I am reminded of the resilience and strength of my clients. Despite the challenges that lie ahead, I am committed to supporting them through the journey, one therapy session at a time.
