Listeria Outbreak at Boar’s Head Plant: Insects, Mold, and Blood Puddles Linked to Deadly Outbreak

The U.S. Agriculture Department recently uncovered a disturbing array of violations at a Boar’s Head plant in Virginia that have been linked to a deadly listeria outbreak. The violations, which included the presence of insects, mold, and puddles of blood, were detailed in newly released records obtained through federal Freedom of Information Act requests. Agriculture Department officials documented a total of 69 instances of noncompliance with federal regulations at the Boar’s Head plant in Jarratt between August 1, 2023, and August 2, 2024.

The repercussions of these violations have been tragic, with nine people losing their lives and 57 individuals being hospitalized after consuming Boar’s Head products contaminated with listeria. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have reported cases of the outbreak in 18 states, with fatalities documented in Florida, Tennessee, New Mexico, South Carolina, Illinois, New Jersey, and Virginia.

Recall of Contaminated Products

As a result of the alarming findings, Boar’s Head initiated a recall of 7 million pounds of “ready-to-eat meat and poultry products” from the Jarratt plant on July 30. The decision to recall the products came after genome sequencing tests on a liverwurst sample confirmed the presence of the strain of Listeria monocytogenes associated with the multistate outbreak. This recall followed an initial recall of over 200,000 pounds of Boar’s Head products.

Inspectors noted several concerning observations during their visits to the plant. Among these were reports of “heavy discolored meat build up” on equipment, flies entering pickle vats, insects crawling on walls, and even dead and alive insects found in various areas of the facility. Additionally, inspectors discovered a “black mold like substance” in different parts of the plant, with some spots as large as a quarter. The presence of multiple leaks, including one with a “green algal growth” in a puddle, was also documented.

Ensuring Food Safety and Addressing Concerns

In response to the recall and the violations identified in the records, a spokesperson for Boar’s Head emphasized the company’s commitment to prioritizing food safety. The spokesperson expressed deep regret for the impact the recall had on affected families and assured the public that the company takes immediate action to address any issues identified by inspectors. Boar’s Head stated that all operations at the Jarratt plant have been paused, an investigation is underway to determine the root causes of the recall, and employees are receiving additional training.

The plant is currently undergoing a thorough disinfection process to ensure the elimination of any contaminants. While the company has taken these steps to address the situation, it remains unclear whether Boar’s Head will face any penalties from the Agriculture Department for the reported noncompliances.

The ongoing investigation into the Boar’s Head plant in Jarratt serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of upholding food safety standards in food production facilities. The repercussions of lapses in these standards can have devastating consequences, as evidenced by the tragic outcomes of the listeria outbreak linked to the facility. It is imperative for food producers to prioritize the well-being of consumers and implement stringent measures to prevent the occurrence of such incidents in the future.
