Discover Your Color Aura if You’re Identified as an Empath
What’s your sign? How about your enneagram type? If you and your two best friends were each members of Donna and the Dynamos from Mamma Mia (2009), which one would you be? In this day and age, these are all questions we might ask someone when trying to get a feel for who they really are. Sometimes, however, you meet someone who just ~exudes~ a certain energy—and you can’t quite put your finger on why. They have a certain… je ne sais quoi, if you will. Luckily, there actually is a word for that: it’s an aura. An aura is the electric magnetic energy field that surrounds you, says Steffi Hill, an astrologer, psychic medium, and intuitive energy healer. “I like to think of it as a vibe check,” says Hill. It’s not something you or I can necessarily see, but trust, it is always there—and can explain a lot about your personality.
Ranging all the way through good old ROYGBIV, each color of the rainbow is associated with a unique aura. And each and every person emanates a color (or multiple colors) that have their own unique meaning and offer a glimpse into one’s personality and the way they move about the world. You can learn about yours by visiting a professional aura reader, or having an aura photograph taken. Meet the experts: Steffi Hill, aka Spirit Sis, is a psychic medium, astrologer, and intuitive energy healer. Eileen Lee is a photographer, aura reader, and founder of the Detroit-based experimental portrait practice AURA AURA.
If communication comes naturally to you, you’ve been labeled an empath a time or two, and your intuition is out of this world—you probably have blue in your aura. “Whenever I see someone with a blue aura, I think of the ocean. They’re calming, peaceful, and serene,” says Hill. “They’re often very old souls… they’re mostly chill people, and they’re not going to ruffle any feathers.” These individuals are also natural-born communicators, says Eileen Lee, an aura reader, photographer, and founder of AURA AURA. That said, your aura can change over time. “For some of us, blue is a period of time that we go through,” says Lee. “It’s periods where we’re trying to own our truth a bit more and be more expressive in who we are.”
All in all, whether it’s temporary or permanent, having a blue aura speaks volumes about your character. “For the most part, [people with blue auras] are here for a soul mission,” says Hill. “They’re healers, helpers, and advocates.” Blue auras are associated with the throat chakra. Every aura color is also associated with a chakra, or an energy point in your body—and the chakra your aura color aligns with can say a lot about you. Red, warmer hues are typically associated with your toes, and staying grounded. Cooler, violet hues, on the other hand, are linked to the crown of your head, which signifies wisdom. Indigo represents your third eye chakra, can be look at as your imagination and intuition. Blue auras relate to the throat chakra, “which is all about self-expression and communication,” says Lee.
“Vulnerability and shame are both within the throat chakra or blue realm,” Lee adds, as are honesty and authenticity. Therefore, owning their vulnerability and being able to express themself is of the utmost importance to someone with a blue aura. The association between communication and the throat chakra will play a major role in blue aura folks’ lives—not just in terms of sticking up for themselves, but for the greater good. “A lot of times, blue feels the need to talk on behalf of people that can’t,” says Hill. “You’ll find blues are naturally advocating [for others] even though they sometimes don’t like to be in the spotlight.”
But wait, there’s more! Because of how empathetic you are, you’re highly susceptible to accidentally taking on other people’s energies, especially out in public and in large crowds. “Blue’s natural state is to be calm, serene, and in its essence,” says Hill. “But if they go out into the world and they’re not spiritually protected, they will be bombarded with [other aura colors].” Sometimes, this can be draining. Blue aura folks should be sure to protect themselves energetically, because “they feel emotions very deeply,” says Hill.
The different blue auras, explained. For the most part, a blue is a blue is a blue… but the different shades of blue that show up in your aura can hold meaning. (Note: Indigo does not count as a shade of blue, but as its own aura color. ROYGBIV, remember?)
“If you’re blue, you will probably go through all of the shades at one point or another,” says Hill. “If you’re a child [and] blue, I see the shades getting darker and richer as you get older.” This next part is where you might need to practice some self-reflection to figure out what your shade of blue really means.
Light Blue
If your aura is light blue or turquoise, you might not be as grounded, says Hill. It’s almost as if folks with a light blue aura may need to do some soul work in order to reach that cobalt shade you associate with a true blue.
Dark Blue
“A true blue aura can be more light or more dark, and when it’s darker, you’re dealing with shadow aspects of that color,” says Lee. This is when that communication aspect of blue auras comes back into play. Per Lee, a person with a darker blue aura might be that one friend who’s going to tell you stuff you don’t want to hear. It’s not always great, but sometimes, it’s necessary. On the other hand, people with dark blue auras might be more evolved, says Hill: “The darker the hue, the more introspection and wisdom has occurred over the years.”
Grayish Blue
If your aura is blue with a gray tint or edge, that may mean you a currently in or about to enter a bit of a funk in life. Hill notes that a gray or muted filter over your blue aura can mean something is off within your spirit; perhaps you’re feeling burnt out.
The color’s placement in your aura chart can also change things.
Not to make your life even more complex, but yes, the placement of the blue in your aura also holds meaning. You can take a look at your aura photograph to see where the blue is, or ask an aura reader. “When you’re looking at the image, the right side of the image correlates to the left side of their body,” says Lee. If you only see blue on the right side of your aura image, it means you’re still starting to cultivate and bring that energy into your life. “If it’s on the left side of the image, that would relate to the right side of their body—so it is something that is leaving their energy field,” says Lee. “They’ve gone through a period where they were dealing with themes of communication and expression and owning who they are or trying to work through purpose.” Finally, if blue is all over your aura photograph, it means you’re “fully in that cycle of your life, or that is who you naturally are,” Lee says.
Blue Auras In Love
People with blue auras can mesh well with any aura color, as long as a few basic needs are being met. “Blues in relationships need to feel seen and heard for who they truly are,” says Hill. “They need someone who will hold space for them.” Lee agrees. “[Blue auras] may be looking to connect with people who provide a safe space for them and are very open and honest,” she says. “It’s about those open lines… a lot of times, communication is the one thing that can make or break a relationship.” Finding self-love is what is truly important to blue auras, Hill notes. “They have to truly love and be aware of their own essence before they get out there,” she says. This can be hard, but for a blue aura, it’s vital–and it will probably come more naturally to you than you might think. “If a blue will state their needs or communicate clearly what they want in relationships and just be true to who they are, they will attract the right partners naturally,” says Hill. Phew. But with that in mind, beware your dreaded people-pleaser side…
Blue Auras In The Workplace
The downside: People with blue auras can have some serious trouble with boundaries, says Hill. This is because they’re big people pleasers and will naturally “overextend themselves to appease others.” This can certainly come into play in relationships, but it’s also something blue auras need to be highly aware of in the workplace. People with blue auras can get super burnt out professionally, and this is when their aura may take on a grayish hue, Hill notes. Because of this, they must set boundaries for themselves so others don’t take advantage of their energy. That being said, blue auras will actually excel in many professional settings as long as they give themselves the space and care to do so. After all, blue auras will approach their career much like they approach the rest of their lives. “People who have more blue auras within work or relationships are people who are very reliable, very trustworthy, and tend to be more loyal because the idea of truth and integrity is always important to them,” says Lee. As for where they’ll work, “they are naturally drawn to service-based industries,” Hill adds. Think nurses, doctors, teachers, and counselors. But those healing vibes are also so versatile! Hill notes that she also associates blue auras with writers, psychics, community advocates, and even actors, because of their empathetic nature.
So, you have blue in your aura. What’s next?
Good news: “If you are already in a blue aura, there is not more you need to necessarily be doing… there’s nothing that’s next unless you’re unhappy with where you’re at,” says Lee. Even still, there are certain things you can do to cultivate or channel blue energy and protect your blue vibes. The most important thing? “Being honest with yourself in all aspects of your life,” says Lee. This means staying vulnerable with others and keeping yourself open–which is an act of great courage in and of itself– will help you to live more authentically. Lee notes that because blue auras are so expressive, they sometimes have to learn to just let things go and go with the flow. “If you’re coming across an obstacle, you can’t force yourself to move forward. You just have to surrender and see how things play out, which can be a challenge for someone with a blue aura,” she says. A blue aura herself, Hill notes that protecting your peace and reminding yourself to slow down is also key. You may have to recalibrate every once in a while. She suggests practices like meditation, journaling, and being out in nature, as well as doing your own shadow work, inner child work, learning to set boundaries, and going to therapy. Find what works best for you and your energy. At the end of the day, you already know who you are and what you need. “What I love about aura photography is that it is an affirming process,” says Lee. “When you have a tarot session, sometimes you’re looking for answers, but what often happens is that it affirms everything you already know.” Learning about your aura colors is a lot like that: It just corroborates what you already knew about your empathetic, communicative self.
